The dress should be hemmed to the pefect length so that you cannot trip over it when you have your shoes on. If you're wearing a petticoat (really, really recommended so you don't have the dress clinging to the insides of your thighs), you can just get a fluffier petticoat to make the skirt a little bit shorter. I recommend buying the shoes and petticoat when you go for your last alteration fitting so they know exactly what they are working with.

Also, if you have a train, be careful while dancing! Even with it bustled up, it usually drags a little bit on the floor (the back should always be a bit longer than the front) and I almost fell over a few times on the dance floor because of the spins!

The brides dress is hemmed when bought by the seamstress at the store...this is done with the shoes she will be wearing on her wedding day...so the edge of the dress and toe of the shoe are the same...the extra material on the dress is at the back called a train...and doesn't interfere with her walking down the aisle.

perfect practice makes perfect practice. Models so it all the time. When you walk with a long stride the dress should follow

She walks slowly, taking short steps.
