Information is the result of processing, manipulating and organizing data in a way that adds to the knowledge of the person receiving it.
In general, data consists of propositions that reflect reality. A large class of practically important propositions are measurements or observations of a variable. Such propositions may comprise numbers, words, or images.
The words, information and data, are used interchangeably in many contexts. However, they are not synonyms. For example, according to Adam M. Gadomski's observation (1993), data are everything what is/can be processed and information are data which describe a physical or abstract domain.

One simple way to make clear the difference..
342836 is the data
34-28-36 is the information
Data normally means the figures.. information is the insight that we gets from these data.. Say for a balance sheet is full of data. The financial state of the company,, whether company is in profit or loss, whether it is improving year on year etc.. is the information..

Someone I forgot whom says years ago: an information is a piece of data that is to be read and holds interest to the human at the receiving end; while data is data supporting the transmission and interpretation of that information.

data is unprocessed instructions that once processed becomes information. Though it is difficult to explain the difference, maybe this well help: "For example, the height of Mt. Everest is generally considered as "data", a book on Mt. Everest geological characteristics may be considered as "information", and a report containing practical information on the best way to reach Mt. Everest's peak may be considered as "knowledge".
