For XP:
1. Click the Start menu button on the Windows taskbar.
2. Click Run... on this menu.
3. Type cmd in the text box that appears. A command prompt window launches on the desktop.
4. In this command window, type ipconfig /all. Details are shown for each of the computer's network adapters. Computers installed with VPN software or emulation software will possess one or more virtual adapters.
5. The IP Address field states the current IP address for that network adapter.
6. The Physical Address field states the MAC address for that adapter.

If you want to find the IP address on your Network you can use free tools like angry ip scanner which can be downloaded from www.download.com. It will give you a list of all live IP's available on the network.

Download and install the program. Open command prompt on your computer and type ipconfig

You will get ip of ur system say its 172.16.0.99

Now open angry ip scanner and scan for range 172.16.0.1 to 172.16.0.255. After the scan you will get a report on the number of live IP's.

It's really simple to answer: IP is fundamental to the working of Internet itself; so any kind of connection in any form would carry the originator IP as well as destination, email, IM, FTP, Web service, all had to carry it in their data packet, all you have to do is intercept them and interpret before they are filtered out, email and Web server is easiest to find that data.
