The girls who said 18-20% are correct. 10% is way too low- that is not customary in the United States- keep in mind that your server is only making $3 an hour- that is what motivates them to give you good service. If your service is horrible tip only what you want but defintly let the manager know why you chose to tip so low. Unfortunaly- there are certain steroetypes (sorry- but like the English) who tip 5-10% always so many times servers don't make much of an effort to do well. It makes the Enlgish look bad- it makes American servers look bad- it's not just the Enlgish- I'm not meaing to pick on one group- but there are always plenty of servers who ignore such stereotypes and give it their all! And for that they should be rewarded - 20%!!

I used to live there, as a standard I used to tip at least 15%. Less if the service was not that good. And nothing if the service was bad!

In restaurants, it is customary to tip 15% for decent service, 18%, 20%, or more is appropriate if service was very good.

In hotels, porters and valets get a few dollars for each service, maids get a few dollars for each night you stay in the room.

At restaurants we usually tip based on 10% of the bill for our party's food.

18% is customary.. but 20% should be the norm unless your service is just aweful.
