The numbers underneath the crest on the Test shirts represent what number player you are to play test cricket for your country. For example, the 393 on Mike Hussey's shirt represents the fact he is the 393rd player to play test cricket for Australia.

In ODI cricket however....
The number on their back is their player number. It is a personal choice and can de determined by a number of factors. It is primarily somethin to ehance crowd enjoyment and make players more recogniseable...a marketing thing.

The numbers on the ODI caps represent the same as the numbers on the test shirt. The 123 on Ricky Pontings cap represents the fact he is the 123rd player to play ODI's for Australia.

The little numbers on their shirts repesent the order in which individual players were selected to play for Australia, with numbers 1 to 11 being the members of the first ever Australian Test team in1877. Its supposed to bring a sense of historical continuity.

Practically all the Test nations now do this, it has become something of a fashion.
