<>BC means "Before Christ;" however, the newer more "PC" use is BCE meaning "Before Common Era" for the people who do not want to refer to Jesus. AD is "Anno Domini" or "Year of Our Lord" and refers to the time after the crucifiction. This is also known now as CE, "Common Era" also for the lack of religious connotation.

A.D. is short form of Anno Domini which when translated from Latin means Year of the Lord and the years from the public ministry of Jesus Christ onwards will have the suffix A.D. The Oxfoed dictionary shows it as " Inthe year of the Christian era.
B.C. is before Christ and the years before Christ's birth are referred to as B.C. 3000 or B.C.20 or whatever.

While everyone was correct for the translation for A.D, B.C however, does not translate into Before Christ. Unfortunately, I couldn't remember which Latin language book gave the correct translation, but its definitely in latin. Sources like Wikipedia are also wrong in their information as well. In fact, I believe that most teachers and lecturers out there might think that B.C means before christ. You will have to keep digging for it (I sure will though) in the mean time. I say this because I'm 100% certain what we thought we knew was wrong because I came across the correct form in the past. Good luck.

BC stands for Before Christ. AD stands for After Death (Christ's) Look at years as a time line with 0 in the middle. 200 B.C. is 200 years before Christ, or on a math line, -200. 200 AD is 200 years after Christ, or +200. 400 years separate 200 BC from 200 AD. More often today, we use the terms bce, meaning before common era, and ce, meaning common era. They are still the same numbers but without the Christian reference.

Anno Domini = Year of (our) Lord.....This means the time after Jesus was "born". The choice is arbitrary as no one knows when he was born.
Before Christ = time before this arbitrarily chosen year.

BC is the time "before Christ." AD is Anno Domini, "in the year of our Lord," which is the time around and after the crucifixion of Christ. Some people incorrectly refer to AD as "after the death" of Christ.
