plimsoll line is a symbol painted on the side of a ship which marks the level to which the ship can be safely loaded.

A plimsoll or plimsoll shoe is a type of athletic shoe with a canvas upper and rubber sole, developed as beachwear in the 1830s by the Liverpool Rubber Company

Yes, there is a connection. This name derived either because of the colored horizontal band joining the upper to the sole resembled the Plimsoll line on a ship's hull, or because, just like the Plimsoll line on a ship, if water got above the line of the rubber sole, the wearer would get wet

Samuel Plimsoll 1824 - 1898 a British politician who was concerned for sailors safety because of the actions of unscrupulous ship owners had a bill passed through parliament that required a safe loading line be painted on the hull of every British ship, later adopted by all counties, this became known as the 'Plimsoll line' and is still in use to-day.

Soft soled 'gym' shoes became called 'Plimsolls' because of the white rubber surrounding the joint between sole and upper.

Wikipedia know all: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plimsol_shoe

The plimsoll line is level that the water comes to on the hull of a floating ship.

Plimsoll shoes are named so because they commonly have a line round them similar to a plimsoll line.

So there is a connection.

The Plimsoll line is the mark on a ships hull that denotes the safe loading limit, i.e. if the line is under water then chances are so will the ship be soon. Plimsolls or gym shoes are basically retro trainers and as far as i know there is no connection.

What Are Plimsolls

When you see a ship in port, there is a series of lines on either side of the bow, on the hull, showing how deep the ship is sitting in the water. As the ship is loaded more and more of these little lines go under water. it is a measure of how deep the ship is floating in the water.
