I suppose you can go through everyone's reply here and go on a download and buying frenzy till you find one that actually works well. Ive been fixing client computers for a while and I have found that most thought they were well protected with Norton or McAfee. Both use to be good until they became the "market leaders" so their product quality has lowered. AVG looks to be the most popular free one here but it's not really that good. I have two options for you.

1) Get ZoneAlarm Firewall, Ad-Aware Antispyware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Windows Defender, and Active Virus Shield as your antivirus. Now you may be thinking what that is. It is a brand new service provided by Kaspersky Labs, the world leader in leading detection rate antivirus software. Kaspersky has a 99.57% detection rate. Active Virus Shield, provided in conjunction with AOL, Kaspersky is providing their scanning engine and updates for free!! Take a look at this chart.

2) Everything above will provide you adequate protection. Otherwise, the get full version of Kaspersky Internet Security with a firewall, antispam, anti phishing (identity theft), antivirus, and antispyware. *You still should get Ad-Aware,Spybot, Defender when you get Security suite.* You can buy directly from Kaspersky Labs at
http://usa.kaspersky.com/store/

OR at these fine retailers.

Frys Electronics,
Office Depot,
Circuit City,
CompUSA.

And no, I don't work for Kaspersky Labs. I hope I helped.

pc pro magazine had a comparison of internet seurity software and they recommended F-Secure Internet Security which is £35 for a year.or Kaspersky Internet Security 6 which is £47..the best free one is zone labs as it uses less of your system resources than avg.

http://www.freeav.com/
Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic reliably protects your private computer against dangerous viruses, worms, Trojans and costly dialers.

It is free forever, and has higher detection rates than avast and AVG free versions. It is at 94% compared to avast at 88% and avg at 84%, also it is lower than the other two on memory usage

Get yourself Kaspersky's antivirus suite, its one of the best in the world, reasonably priced, and does an excellent job, it not only looks for known virus, but uses heuristic scanning to look for files that maybe "acting" like virus's and then brings this to your attention, you can delete it or leave it if you know what it is.

Webroot for spyware and trend for virus. Norton is the overall best. Yes it is a bit spendy, but your identity is more than worth it!!

Hi, I would suggest 'Bit Defender antivirus plus 10' from: http://www.bitdefender.co.uk it costs £36.95 for a 2 year subscription.
However there are free alternatives for non commercial use which are surprisingly good too.
Here are some examples:
Free firewall: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en
Free antivirus & Antispyware software:

Hope this helps

if you still have the mcafee installer cd/dvd, just unistall your mcafee completely (go to control panel) and then reinstall it again. this works with norton w/c only gives 90days subscription so i think it will also work w/ mcafee. you will then receive new updates again fo the prescribe period of your subscription.
