WarrenD has it got most of it right.

You could add that the German Military capitulated in secret in 1918, pressed for the formation of a 'democracy' then blamed the capitulation on a 'stab in the back' from the civilian government.

Remember that Hitler was also democratically elected but when in power disposed of opposition ruthlessly even erstwhile loyal supporters (Ernst Roehm leader of the Brownshirts for example).

He also used latent anti-semitism to demonize the German Jews as an internal 'enemy' of the state.

Part of his philosophy (if that is not too grand a word) was that the Aryan race was supreme, the pinnacle of man's progress. Which is great if you are an 'Aryan. So people who identified with 'Aryanism' tended to want to believe him, after all, it is always nice to belong to a 'super' race isn't it?

Hitler played on this. For example, the Nazi party took over the Scout movement and used to to instill those 'virtues' which best supported their belief. They spent a lot of time and money giving members of the movement a wonderful time. Those outside it were not just outside it, they were suspicious and liable to have their family investigated.

Similar methods were used in all areas of society to subvert any form of individualism or non-conformism and the penalties for being 'outside' were severe.

But remember, all the time large numbers of the population agreed with him and I dare say that had there been and election in 1939 Hitler would have had a better than convincing majority.

Many Germans felt they had been betrayed by their government and by the Jews and by others at the end of World War I. The country truly suffered. The Weimar Republic was never very strong.

Hitler appealed to those people who felt Germany could do more. He also made use of a popular general, Hindenburg, to gain power.

Once he was in as Chancellor, Hitler was able to consolidate his gains. He used the Reichstag fire as a launching platform to persecute the Jews. Many Germans never knew what all Hitler was up to, and he didn't make that clear. He was an effective politician and a very effective public speaker who used some of the most powerful advertising appeals ever to promote himself and his regime.

By launching the Volkswagen the Nazis made a show of trying to do something for the working German, who couldn't afford a car of his own.

Remember, the Germans came out of inflation that was beyond our imagination, and reparations that were punitive beyond anything we can imagine. They were ripe for a takeover, and Hitler was smart enough--along with his advisers--to see that and take advantage of it.
