I think that, to some extent, this depends on what one reads. For instance, if you only read comics or the approved reading list of a particular religion, then you're bound to be exposed to a limited number of new concepts.
However, for the most part, reading affects ones awareness by exposing them to new ideas, new cultures, new hobbies, new discoveries, new concepts, new theories, etc. ("new" meaning new to them, not necessarily new to the world). Reading, if you let it, can broaden your horizons immeasurably.
In my personal experience, I have found that the most intelligent and interesting people are those who read voraciously.
Btw, in light of the first answer you received, I'd like to point out that there's a difference between "literacy" and "reading." Literacy is the ability to read, a "DANGER" sign for instance. Reading is the verb form which means actually doing it, reading books for example.

well if you cant read the sign that says "DANGER" you may not be aware your life might turn out to end a bit sooner than you had planned.
