According to NASA chief Michael Griffin "Everything that i have seen in ISRO is absolutely first rate.US has the largest space programme in the world, but what we do is not being done better than what i see here."he said this when he visited ISRO facilities last year.Only advantage that NASA has is its large budget of about 16 billion dollars(annual) is 18 times that of ISRO's budget.USA is a developed country but v r not.

Wow, very nice answers above, which have hardly any truth. Isro cant be like NASA. Understand the technology difference. Our satellite components and materials like - Battery, Hi-rel components, solar panels, gold film shield, navigation sensors, RF & Microwave which builds transponders -- everything is imported and majority from the USA. They may not all be invented by the USA, but definitely not by India. So, u can say that 80% spares are imported. Now, space launch vehicle (SLV) - components and materials like Apogee motors, Aluminum alloy rigs AA2014, ALuminum alloys (aerospace grade), inertial sensor calibration systems, Wire and ropes (aerospace quality), Screws and fasteners, Chemicals, Cryogenic Motors -- Everything imported.
We are struggling to explore the moon, unmanned..where as, we all know NASA did it long ago with man. They had skylab and they have Hubble, they have SPirit & opportunity on Mars, they have tracked all planets...so more budget just will not work. The purpose of Isro and NASA is different. Isro is for satellite launching which works for India's immediate need and we are adopting readily available and proven technology for the purpose, which need not to be redefined. Where as, NASA is only exploration....So, no comparison of Isro and NASA please

I am happy that someone wants to think in those terms outside the organisation.
First we have to have youngsters who are ready to dedicate their life for the cause of science and development in the country rather than money which the IT industry offers.
Second we should become independent thinkers like the great pillars of ISRO and DAE - Vikram Sarabhai, Homi Bhaba, etc and question the fundamentals which will enable us to see new frontiers in science.
Next is as someone pointed out, popularisation of the various opportunities which are available for the science students in these organisations.
With these put in practise we will be a step closer to your goal!
making INDIA the best in everything!

being a geo informatist i feel it as very nice question that every indian should think it out...
1.We should be financially stable such that we need not bother even if the satellie launched by us explodes coz of minor tech fault... and wasted millions of bugs....
2.We must control brain drain..... such we preserve lots of abdul kalam's we inherited.....
also to say that nasa also crossed this level of equipments... we must think of our positive side of having enormous amount of man power instead to think on the fact that we don have modern equipments....
I have to agree that we use many components that we import frm U.S.A..
but everyone agreed that out of many brains involved in creating an instrument in u.s.a indian brian tops it....
So no doubt that even if we come late we will be the latest...... surely isro ll rock the world......

If I stand on a great man's shoulders and see further than he does, that does not make me equal to or greater than that man.
India will have to spend what we spend and wait a long time to be where NASA is today.
