Well, my sister wants to buy a new laptop, and she has a budget of around US $1,200. Just wanted to ask some questions:

-What's are the desirable brands to go for?
-What processors are good, and what are avoidable?
-What's the deal with the new windows, should I go for one with it?
-Processing speeds: around what speeds are reasonably good for processors?

Thanks

Brands to consider: HP, Dell, Alienware

Processors: Athlon X2 or Core 2 Duo

Memory: If you want Vista, make sure the laptop has at least 1GB of memory, but preferably 2GB

Personally, I'd get a laptop that has the Core 2 Duo, which is the best on the market today. They're not that much more expensive than an Athlon X2, and they blow all the competition away by a large margin. Don't focus on processor "speed" anymore, because that category is misleading. For example, a 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo can easily crush a 3.0GHz Pentium D or an Athlon X2 3400+.

I prefer HP for laptops, as they have the best-looking and most-reliable models I've seen. Dell has the better customer support, however, which helps make them a good second-choice.

Though I'd say stick with XP until some of the bugs are hammered out of Vista, it's totally up to you. The downside of XP is that it's lifecycle is more than halfway over. It won't be long until Microsoft starts to phase out support (sometime in the next 2-3 years). The advantage, though, is that it's been around for 6 years and is quite reliable to say the least. All software you can buy new on the market today is compatible, as well as all hardware.
