There is only success in hardwork. Luck gets you "there" faster, though.

Pure luck is in game of speculations

Luck can also help in other areas of life
But such success can be short lived. As luck runs out one comes crashing down.
Hard work contributes to the capabilities of the individual, which are essential for success. But with the total lack of luck the individual may never taste worthwhile success.

A combination of the two is what make a real success.
Luck should open up opportunities and hard work should convert those opportunities into success for it to be meaningful and worthwhile.

How do you measure success?
There are different ways to measures ones own success.

Some can be successful in criminal endeavors.
Some can be successful with money.
Some can be successful in marriage.
Some can be successful in the work.
Some can be successful at being lazy.
Some can be successful at being idiots.
It's all a matter of opinion.

Success is measured in what you believe the meaning of success is and nobody can change what your meaning of success is to you.
No one can be ever be completely successful in the eyes of others. You can only be successful in your own eyes.

Hardwork, naturally, tends to bring about success, but so can cheating.

Luck is something that occurs while cheating or working hard.

A friend once said to me, "the harder I work, the luckier I get."

But then again, some of the toughest jobs are minimum wage. Ever see a wealthy coal-miner?

Put it this way, there aren't too many people out there who really, 100% expect to win the Lotto, so working hard to educate yourself isn't going to hurt. I believe that's the key.
