Robert Redford directed it in Montana and some in Idaho I think. I was working as a Personal Manager at the time, and my client turned down the Craig Sheffer role, against my Screams and cries to do the part. He was more interested in keeping his vacation plans. He wasn't the smartest boy int he world. Redford wasn't pleased, but in hindsight, Sheffer was more appropriate in the role anyway.

Only the pretty scenes were filmed in Montana.
