Congrats on using a NO-KILL trap. That is a very responsible and humane approach. My pet mice do not like cheese (too salty).

Here's what I use to catch my pets when they escape:

1) a raw -or- no-salt peanut with peanut butter spread on the top. This works every time!
2) Peanut butter rolled in oats with a raisin on top.

Something sweet and easy to eat.

Jam or marmalade, Peanut butter, honey that kind of stuff

BUT , I know this may sound macho and in-humane why buy a live trap?? The idea is to stop the mice from coming into your house not giving them a second chance and hoping they reform and become model mice in society.

When a mouse enters your house it leaves a scent trail for other mice to follow. So a mouse, called Tom gets in and thinks "cool place, I'll let Harry know about this one" So Harry, who always follows Tom's scent comes in, likes the look of the place and leaves his scent.

Now a gang of 5 mice ALWAYS follow Harry's scent, wherever he goes, so they follow the scent...and so on and so on...get the picture.

It may sound cruel but you have to stop Tom's scent "dead" for the want of a word otherwise Tom will just think, "Yea right, and this live trap is gonna stop me coming back...as if" and so the circle or trail starts.

With vermin it's best to stop the problem at the start or end up over-run with the little rascals in your food, on your bed and even in your wash basket and if they pee and poo in there you'll end up throwing all your clothes away coz their pee can be really pongy and take ages to get rid of.

Think again and consider the options. NOt trying to be hard on meeces just practical to your well being

Tony Ms answer with the plaster, doesnt work, I did this and I ended up with heaps of rock hard white mouse poos all over the place. ( Sorry Tony)

Peanut butter is a good attractant
I have a live trap also and a mouse actually chewed its way out. I did catch a good number with it before this happened. It must have been left in there for too long.

Have you thought of how you are going to dispose of the little rodent once you have caught it?? Might be your next question topic.

Best bait:
a piece of biscuit, or a small square of bread smeared with peanut butter.
peanut butter gives off a strong sweety nutty smell which will attract the mice.

However:
live traps are not a good idea. the first mouse becomes trapped and urinates, leaving a 'fear' pheromone on the trap.
after you've got rid of the first mouse, the other mice will avoid the trap, because they smell the pheromones left behind.

best option is to get a spring trap that snacks the little bugg3rs neck, before he gets the chance to pee.....and, even if he does pee, the pheromone will likely be left on the floor, rather than the trap

I found chocolate good! The trouble with the live traps is that they gnaw out of them. In the end the 50p ones are the most efficient.

peanut butter or sunflower seeds. Assuming your live trap is good. I used to just use a bucket with a crawl stick leading up to it.

I always used peanut butter or cheese. Peanut butter has a stronger scent to me and it attracted more mice.

I keep guinea pigs, and I use guinea pig food in the mousetrap. Mice don't like cheese.
