There is no difference. You can find differences in things that already have similarities. There is a difference between an orange and a lemon. There is a difference between red and pink.
But love and hate? How can you differentiate two things that produce the same amount of feelings, the same intensity of thoughts and the same amount of time spent thinking about them?
They are emotions, therefore they do not have a clear definition, which is what one needs when trying to find differences in things. Love and hate are, perhaps, the most fluctuating emotions a person can experience. They can reach magnitudes that would make fanaticism pale in comparisson. And they are the only emotions that allthough people consider opposites, that are so very close to each other. Love can turn to hate with but a slight incident and hate can grow to become love in the end.
You cannot define differences between love and hate since the effect of each one varies greatly from person to person. It is often that we hate things about people we love, and we often love things about people we hate.
This is a cute poem from the movie "10 Things I Hate About You".
I think it portrays nicely that Hate and Love are so closely linked.

I hate the way you talk to me, and the way you cut your hair.
I hate the way you drive my car.
I hate it when you stare.
I hate your big dumb combat boots, and the way you read my mind.
I hate you so much it makes me sick; it even makes me rhyme.
I hate the way you're always right.
I hate it when you lie.
I hate it when you make me laugh, even worse when you make me cry.
I hate it when you're not around, and the fact that you didn't call.
But mostly I hate the way I don't hate you. Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.

It is strange that when people love someone, or hate someone, they rarely admit that they sometimes have both feelings for him/her. That is because love and hate actually define each other. There could be no hate withou love and of course we could never understand love if we did not know what hate is. And even we feel one or the other, its meaning becomes so much more clear when we experience them both.
Its like light and darkness. It is impossible to teach darkness to a sunray, but a sunray would not exist were it not for the darkness enveloping the world around it. And it is only when we are in a dark room that we are able to see a sunray more clearly.
Hope I helped...
