Teaching ppl to be sensitive to others is a healthy thing.

Using terminology that is of a negative tone is detrimental. For example, I can't stand to hear the phrase, "runs like a girl." unless it is actually about someone running I guess. But most of the time it is referring to running away like a coward. That always ticks me off when I believe women have more courage than men when it comes for standing up and fighting for what we believe in at all cost.

With all that said though, it can be taken to the extreme. And I have no clue what has happen to the phrase, "sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me."

That teaches us to let negative things bounce off us and that we choose to let somebody's elses opinion of us hurt us or not. We seem to have lost that mentality.

The origin of the phrase "politically correct" actually goes back to Stalinist Russia in the 1930s. Those who were found to be lacking in political correctness were sent to Siberia or shot.

It wasn't a good thing then and it's not a good thing now. Someone else nailed it exactly: PC denies freedom of speech and stifles all honest and open debate on important issues.

The sooner we relegate political correctness to the garbage heap of history the better off the world will be.

Being careful with your choice of words and using "politically correct" language, so as not to offend is one thing, since some people have no manners. But it has become ridiculous and misused and inhibits people from real freedom of speech.

Okay, after thinking about this a little more, here goes. I will continue to say Merry Christmas, no matter what anyone thinks, even though it is considered politically incorrect by some.. An illegal alien is just that, illegal, no matter how anyone tries to disguise it by saying "undocumented worker". It's gotten to the point where everyone, and everyword can offend SOMEONE with their choice of words, and you have to walk around on eggshells all the time trying to be INoffensive and that's ridicuous.

Political incorrectness has lead us down the road of destruction under the current leadership. Correct would have been a far easier road to travel.
