,,,underestimating them?)

Just a few years ago, all we heard about was how much smarter the Japanese were than Americans, how much better their educational system was, how much better their factories (and how they treated employees) were. Everyone was studying Japanese in preperation for their business careers. A majority of imported products came from Japan.

Now, all I hear about is China! Has Japan lost its place in the manufacturing community? Is it still an important country economically--especially in connection with the US?

Basically, Japan went through a HUGE recession in the 90s that they never seemed to quite come out of. At the same time, China was picking up their leftovers and about this time Hong Kong, capitalist capital of the world, was given back to China by Britain after the 100 year hold was over.

Add all that together... Japan just isn't what it used to be but I wouldn't count them out forever.

China is the new kid on the block and eager to grow and make up for lost time; economically and otherwise, China can afford cheap labor and knows how to use it to their advantage. Japan may be just as perplexed as the US is right now. Japan is resilient and is an interesting and creative competor who will probably continue to excel in the importing/exporting business. So much depends on it for them.

japan's economical bubble burst at the height of everything and they've been recovering since. but they still have a good government structure and have slowly been improving. things such as their job system (job hunting or in the work place) and also the educational system are all very strict and is always under a lot of debate and controversy.
