I know that this in explained in the book, of course it because Tolkin would never make this kind of mistake, but I keep forgetting. They are immortal yet when they show up to battle they die, is there a special type of metal that kills them or something?

The Noldor race, Elves in the Middle Earth, have been cursed by the God Manwee, because of their sins, and slaying of their kins. Manwee's messenger said, Noldor race will live eternally, years will not effect you, diseases will not touch you, yet your lives will be stained with tears.

That's why the Elves live immortal in normal cases, but in the battle, they die like humans or other races.

You can find detailed information on Silmarillion

No special metal, just wounds. It's a convention of fantasy that characters that are ageless are referred to as immortal, which is a bit confusing. They're not immortal in the since that it's impossible for them to experience death, but they do not age or fall ill unto death.

yeah I'm going with what everyone else said. Elves can die, but not from natural things like diseases and illnesses. they die in battle or they reach a certain age and "retire" like at the end of the third movie/book.

They are immortal, not invulnerable. They don't die of natural causes such as age, disease (I assume), but if you run them through with sword they die just like everyone else.

They're immortal, not invincible. Immortal meaning they will never die of natural causes.

They have an infinite life-span, but they can still be killed. Immortal does not mean omnipotent.

No, they simply don't die of NATURAL causes, like aging or disease.

Maybe the best way to put it is that Elves are immune.
