i have experienced it and its very powerful. there have been studies and its true-- children will act however you treat them-- you label them "the stupid one" and they will be stupid, "the lazy one" will be lazy, and "the smart one" will succeed.

the specific study i read about years ago was where "advanced" highschool children excelled when labeled as advanced while the "regular" students lagged behind. when kids who were "regular" according to test scores were LABELED advanced for the study--they excelled.

same with your parents labelling you shy.

Yes,. labelling as a whole is such crap,.. people who label should be beaten

when we are young,. we are very impressionable.. and its easy for us as children to believe certain labels,.. and even take on those roles....

When i was yong i wore glasses,.. so i got my share of that you must be smart BS... or since i was tall,. it was,. you must paly basketball and all that stuff...

it seems that all the parents do it. mine too. but i never tell it to my kids. and if someone tell them i use to say that they are not shy but they don't like to interact with everybody and maybe they don't want to talk at that moment.
