I was just clipping my guinea pigs nails and I noticed that one of them had a lot of skin coming off onto my shirt...so I poked around and saw that there were these little itty bitty bugs--further research indicated that they were lice. I have no idea how they got them though! I make a point not to touch other rodents in pet stores and they haven't been outside or anything. Really confusing! My main question is whether or not my cat can get them. I looked everywhere online but I don't see a question relating to that, so if any of you could help me that would be great. I'm calling tomorrow to get them schedule for a vet visit.

Okay, just posted and I saw another question of a similar sort and heard "Fur mites" mentioned... I looked it up and there are two kinds. The "Walking Dandruff" descirption is dead on because at first I thought it was just dandruff... *sigh*

The question still stands though, how on earth did they get them?

Lice a universal. You can get them from your Guinea Pig, your cat, and vice-versa.

No, your cat will not contract lice from your guinea pig. Lice are rather host specific.
