The Pentium D is indeed 32-bit/64-bit hybrid that can run in either mode like the Athlon, no question about that.
Of the two you have listed, the Athlon 64 will win in a majority of benchmarks, though by a slim margin in most cases. Gaming is really where the Athlon will take the lead. You can size it up yourself here:

Realize that there are two versions of each processor you listed above, so knowing the exact model could make a difference. Overall though, I typically advise users to stay away from the Pentium D. They suck a lot of power and get very hot (causing other components to run at higher than normal temperatures, such as your hard drive).
Instead, consider a Core 2 Duo from Intel. Currently, these are the best on the market beating even the Athlon X2 easily in just about all benchmarks. Best of all, they run at half the power of the Pentium D and a heck of a lot cooler.

A classic question, with a good number of solutions for the two factors. i think of I actual have a quite impartial opinion, using fact i've got continually been a hardcore AMD fan. even nonetheless, i'm engaged on an i7 in the present day. In a SiSoftware Sandra attempt of tangible power between the processors, an i7 920 (the backside sort) @ 2.sixty six ghz BEATS the AMD Phenom™II X4 965 Black version @ 3.4ghz. Do you spot something unusual there? additionally, the two.sixty six runs cooler. As yet another bonus, it takes triple channel ddr3 RAM. I actual have an i7 920 working at 3.8 good. it's going to bypass to 4.2ghz with a voltage of basically a million.3. it fairly is engaged on inventory air cooling. I even by risk touched the backside of the heatsink and rubbed countless the thermal paste off. Idles around 36C and a lot around 78C. not sure on the temps for the AMD. 64GFLOPS to 51GFLOPS in a assessment of the best AMD and the backside i7. wager which had the sixty 4? The i7. My (OC'd) i7 920 runs at 117GFLOPS. No extra desirable/water cool. And it fairly is not even maxed. Bang for the dollar? actual, it fairly is Intel.

Well, of those 2 processors, the Pentium is faster, but if you get an Athlon x2 it will beat the pentium d. Pentium D is 32 bit.

While I can't recommend one over the other I can tell you the Pentium D is 64-bit and duel core.

I like Pentium D 945. It's not that expensive like core 2 duo. I read what people said about it and I see that it's pretty good. I am also going to get that processor my new Vista computer.
