I'm posting this for a girl who cant access internet. She will give birth this May, baby's dad doesnt want to get married. She's 19, unemployed, so does the young dad. If they dont get married, will she still be able to get any social benefits or welfare she suppose to get because of birth of the baby as long as the dad's name is on the birth certificate? (they are both citizens, if without any welfare, she can not even afford herself, I dont know how can she afford the baby) or she has to get married?

thanks

No she doesn't have to be married at all. She doesn't even have to have the fathers name on the birth certificate. But, they will ask her who the father is and even provide test for paternity and then they will persue child support from him. She can apply now for WIC, which will give her food for herself and later the baby too. If she nurses she will continue to get some for herself too. She can also now get foodstamps and even help with housing and rent. There is also help for utilities. She is intitled now to a medical card for her medical care, and as soon as the child is born it too will be covered. There is a lot of help out there, it is just asking around about where to go. Your local Welfare Office can help her a lot.

Yes she will be able to get public assistance and he will have to get a job and pay child support... Is she living with her parents? She also can get WIC and medicaid...Even if she marries this guy if he is not working how would that be any better?
