John Petrucci is the greatest guitar player because:
A. He structures a solo like a classical composer would. It's like a good story; it starts out with an intro, goes into phrases and paragraphs, and finally has an ending so momentous is breaks the heart.
B. He is even better at improvising.
C. He writes the most incredible guitars lines imaginable.
D. He shreds with better techique than anyone.

Good examples are found on any Dream Theater or Liquid Tension Experiment song. But the best would have to be
A. Learning to Live- off of Images and words- mainly for compositional.
B. Beyond This Life- off of Scenes From A Memory- mainly for soloing.

Jimi Hendrix November 27, 1942, Seattle, Washington – September 18, 1970, London, England) was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. Hendrix is recognized as one of the greatest and most influential guitarists in rock music history.[1] After initial success in England, he achieved worldwide fame following his 1967 performance at the Monterey Pop Festival. Later, Hendrix headlined the iconic 1969 Woodstock Festival before his death in 1970, at the age of 27.

Jimi - need I say more? Honestly - any tune will do.

David Gilmour - listen to the LIVE guitar solos of "sorrow" and "comfortably numb" Personally I prefer "Pulse"

Kirk Hammett - listen to the guitar solos (studio, album recordings) in the songs "orion", "sanitarium", "the thing that should not be"

Jerry Cantrell - "whale and wasp" - simple, but whoa!

Kenny Wayne Sheppard - 'blue on black' - the solo is excellent

These are my personal opinions for best works - I don't know if they are the best guitarists, but those are the best performances as far as most dumbfounding and amazing to me personally.

Really hard question - ask me tomorrow and you would get different answers. lol

that is a loaded question my friend, all answers will be opinion from hardcore fans from many different genres, so here is my 2 cents:

I have a few that I rank at the top -

Stevie Ray Vaughn (dead) - any song will do for a sample.

Jerry Garcia (dead, no pun intended) - heavily under rated, but check out "Terrapin Station", "Eyes of the World", "Help On The Way/Slipknot!/Franklin's Tower" just as a few samples - live or studio versions.

Warren Haynes (living; Allman Bros., GOV'T MULE,) - check out "Thorazine Shuffle", "Bad Little Doggie", "Sco-Mule" or any variety of live tracks.

Eric Clapton - need I say more here?

Jimi Hendrix - ditto.

I could go on for hours, but these are a few of my top favorite players.

Tom Morello by far, just listen to anything by RATM, or Audioslave he is a genious in rythym, tone, pitch, and dynamics without even knowing what those words mean.

Look up the following tracks: Guerilla Radio, Freedom, Bulls on Parade, Renegades of Funk, Sleep Now in the Fire. Unbelievable.

David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, no doubt. He makes that guitar sound like it's singing all by itself. Check out his long riffs in the middle of and at the end of Comfortably Numb and Another Brick In the Wall Part 2. (As cliche as those are, he has a LOT of great work over the years)

I would say it's a tossup between Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. Clapton for his truly unparalleled skill, and hendrix for his pure inborn talent and passion.

Listen to anything by Clapton, and really just about anything by Hendrix. They are Guitar Gods pure and simple. Totaly different music styles but equaly amazing.

I find Steve Howe's playing very inspired and passionate. Check out any of the Yes albums between 1970 to 74.
