It means they are using that job as a means to get a better job in the end.

It sounds like it could mean 2 different things.

a means to an end
something that you are not interested in but that you do because it will help you to achieve something else. Mike doesn't have any professional ambitions. For him, work is just a means to an end.

a means to an end
something done to achieve something else. You may get tired of regular physical exercise, but it's simply a means to an end.

it means that the person is only doing that job because they need the money. they dont enjoy the job and would happily leave it if there was another way they could make equal or more than the amount of money they make already
basically they are only doing the job on sufference. hope this helps! =0Þ

It just means that they are doing the job to reach their goal. To save money for a car, a holiday or whatever. It's NOT their dream job but it will do to achieve what they want. (Usually money!)

Unless they fancy their boss (or co-worker) and he/she is the goal!

it means that a person has a certain goal (example: to raise $10000 / going to heaven). Working is one way to reach this goal. Winning the lottery is another way to reach this goal.

If the goal is to go to heaven, then doing good deeds is also called a means to an end.

hope i am helpful :)

Ok that means I am using this to get to what I really want. Example: I am digging ditches to earn money to pay my bills. The digging ditches is the means...the end being your paycheck on friday to get the bills. It usually implies that you do something you don't like to get something you do like.

They only do it because they want to get something out of it in the end (probably the money) and not because they enjoy it.
