Years ago I read this story and I don't remember the title or anything. People came down to research a destroyed planet - and they find a statue that they can only read Lib, and a stadium that they find destroyed that has a sign that says Go Yank or something, and either way they end up being aliens that come to earth after humans have destroyed themselves. I can't remember anything else - Does any one have any clue of it at all? People always say the story is familliar but no one can remember nothing of it. I even asked bookstores, librarys and all.

I seem to remember a Star Trek Episode that sounded something like that. The Captain and crew meet a group of cave dweller types that worship a fragment of the Declaration of Independence.
Not sure if this is what you mean.
