It is very arrogant to think that being British we have a copyright over the English language.
Most English speaking nations have a local dialect.
The Americans are exporting their culture through dominance over much of the media we see and hear. I can't see that changing " any time soon ".

Oh, come on. . . I'm an American English teacher in China with a degree in English Education. I work with many other foreign teachers, many from the UK. I also use Cambridge texts. The difference between British and American English is largely insignificant, if either is taught well. As I always tell my students, "I can understand good British English far better than poor American English."

I think it is not really the British's problem. Personally, I'd prefer it since we are the land of Shakespeare but we can't just stop them. They know English; but, it's American English. I find it hard for them to learn English from an American person.

If they did, it would be a case of "Physician, heal thyself". My pet peeve is the way they speak. I was educated in a former British colony and we were taught to speak what the average man-in-the-street in England would describe as "prop'ah" English. They are surprised at how well we speak English while they sound so uneducated. (Sorry, if any Brits are reading this, but that's what it sounds like.) They sound as if they all come from Liverpool or thereabouts.
Well, that's my 2 cents worth and I'm glad for the opportunity to get it off my chest.

That's a tricky one. I am not British and yet I speak better English that most British (my work colleagues are testament to this) I was taught English in my home country (South Africa) and was disappointed when I arrived in the UK, to find that proper English grammar is not used anymore.

??? For your information, Americans speak their own language which is called American-English; and their language has no less importance/value than UK-English; in my opinion, American-English is by far better than UK-English, at least Americans don't speak as if they have hiccups 24/7;)
If you're talking about 'slang', then, evey country, and every region within the same country, has its own slang words; so there isn't much to blame Americans for;) besides, I love the way they abbreviate everything;) People should stop considering American-English just as a sort of vulgar dialect, a kind of butchered English, because it is actually a downright LANGUAGE.

I haven't got a problem with American English as such, just the way it's been creeping into a lot of advertising. I hate to see company names on trucks and vans such as Plumb Center, it really irks me as does color instead of colour. Petty I know........

The British should learn other foreign languages, such as French, Spanisch, Polish or German, as they are also a part of Europe. and as soon as they will learn foreign languages, their self-awareness and self-consciousness of their own idiom will also rise!
