It is because hate sellers such as Ann Cultor, Sean Hannity, Bill O Reily make profit when Dems hate Repubs and vice versa. After 911 the country was united without a crack and then politicians from both sides but mostly the Repubs put in wedge issues to draw lines in sand dividing neighbors, siblings and friends. Its funny that the same administration that is so against gay marriage, adoption etc when the VP's daughter is involved makes the argument that that's personal not politics. I guess the rest of us are not sons or daughters of anyone. Not the troops, not the gays or lesbians, not the liberals. Does anybody amongst us really think issues such as abortion, gay marriage would be solved certainly not in another ten or fifteen years. But such issues divide us for the benefit of politicians and hate profiteers.
Remember United We Stand, and Divided We Fall.

I can turn that around & ask why Democrats hate Republicans with such fervor. I see republican hostility as reactive the the hate spewed by Democrats. It's hard to like people who continuously villify you.

I dont believe they all hate us, of course you will always have the ones on the far right and the ones on the far left that will constantly be bickering over some issue but when it came down to an emergency like 9/11, we all pulled together as Americans!! When policies are very controversial then you will see the politicians choose a side to gain a political advantage. You see that now over the Iraq war.

Because Bush drew the line in the sand with his now famous fascist quote, "you are either with us or against us." Originally this was used with great effect to demonize democrats who disagreed with Bush, and it split the country. Unfortunately now, there are Republicans who have started opposing the president, so they are being necessarily put into the same category of those who are aiding and abetting the "terrorists." All of this is a disease on the body politic, and will come to no good unless it is stopped. If this continues, Bush will be all alone and the rest of the population will be against him, and presumeably we will all then be on the side of the terrorists. What will he do with all of us ? Camps?

Because after 9/11 everything became so partisan. Not that it wasn't before, but I think the war on terror has actually made things worse. For a short while, there was unity among everyone after 9/11, but unfortunately Republicans took advantage of the situation to try to use it as a political issue. It's sad that it happened that way. Now they are suffering the blow back from their own consequences.

That's a good question...

The division goes back to the 70s with the uprising of Karl Rove. Karl Rove figured out that manipulating prejudices and hate was the number one way to motivate ppl to vote a certain way. Ppl will vote AGAINST something before they vote FOR something. IE, gay marriage.

Karl Rove has been quoted as saying his two favorite propaganda issues in a campaign to use is gay marriage and abortion.
