For the first answerer: An infrared bulb will not produce visible light; it produces infrared. Hence the name. In any case, normal incandescent bulbs produce about 10% light and 90% heat, so basically you have no clue.

A 40W bulb will produce 40 watts of heat. What temperature this corresponds to depends on a host of factors, principally the size and composition of the enclosure, the external temperature, and how well insulated the enclosure is.

Your best bet is to try it and monitor the temperature. If you need to keep the temperature constant you need some sort of sensor-switch setup to turn the lamp on when the temperature gets too low and turn it off when the temperature is too high (the same way electric ovens and irons work). If you just want to turn it on at nights or something, all I can suggest is trying it out to see how the temperature goes. But be aware that the results will change depending on the weather and the season.

That would depend on the size of the tank you are using....A large tank will not get as hot as a small one, using the same bulb. The design would also make a difference...is the tank all glass (like a fish tank) or does it have wooden sides and a glass front panel? I would suggest a "trial-and error" approach... Place a thermometer in the tank, switch on the bulb and measure the temperature every hour. This will indicate whether your bulb is giving you the right temperature,or if you need to go for a greater or lesser wattage.
