Your question pre-supposes that the world today is "cynical". It isn't necessarily cynical. No more so than some other eras. So let us re-state the question:Does religion have a place in the world?
Well, whether you call it "religion" or "philosophy", the human being is still looking for the answers to the BIG questions of life: Who are we? Why are we here? What is life? What is death? What are our values of good and evil? What does it all mean? Is it all just relative, or are there absolutes of right and wrong? Are we alone, or are we here in relation to something or Someone else?
When you pose the question that way,....well,then, yes religion still holds a place in our world, insofar as it posits answers to those questions. You or I may accept the answers or reject them--if you believe in free will and the power of the intellect to come to conclusions...but you can't say that religion doesn't have a place in the modern world to attempt answers to those questions.

Don't think of religion as some mystical life changing experience, it's a business and it's about control - so yes it still has a place for the simple-minded, superstitious, sheep-like masses

Yes, religion will always be relevant as long as humanity exists. Religion isn't necessarily defined by a god, doctrine or moral law.
Simply put, religion is a belief system and everyone adheres to one regardless of whether they are conscious of it.
Religion is a natural and healthy element to every human's identity.
