There are NO desirable neighborhoods in Tacoma. It was named the country's most stressful city to live in because of the winter weather, the pollution, the traffic and the smell (known locally as the Tacoma Aroma).

I live in Midland and I love it. It has a slightly rural feel: When my 4 year old daughter and I are driving around, we like to count the horses and cows we see along the way. Very unusual for the middle of a big city.

Midland is also part of the Franklin Pierce School District, which is in my opinion the best one around. I was a public school teacher for 14 years in the FP district, as well as Tacoma and Federal Way. I made a point of buying a house in the FP district so that my children could go there.

University Place (to the west) is also good and has its own good school district. It tends to be more expensive, though. Also to the west is Fircrest. It is also more expensive, but is a good area. However, it is part of the Tacoma School District, which isn't so great.

The people that said to avoid the East side are right. However, there is a new housing project that is almost completed in Salishan that is supposed to help things there a lot. Parkland is also not the best, but you can always find good "pockets" of houses even in not so good neighborhoods.

Stay away from the east side. And when they say "east," they mean east of the freeway.

I know that Tacoma often has a bad rep, but in all earnestness, it's not that bad. My brother lived there, and he lived in a cute old house on the west side. You will have to remember that most of it is old.

One way to find out if a neighborhood is "good" is to go to GreatSchools.net. Find the schools that score high (I'd go for elementary schools). Then find a house in the district of this school. It stands to reason that if the children are studying, they are not getting into trouble. And they won't get into trouble if their parents are teaching them (by example) to respect themselves and others.

It's a great house-hunting trick I picked up when my husband and I had to move from town to town for work.

Good luck!

Tacoma is the gehto it is one of the scariest area's of Seattle and I think it is the scariest. Most of the crazy's are from that area, like the east coast sniper is originally from Tacoma and Ted Bundy was from that area and then I believe it was around 2004 the Tacoma police chief shot his wife and himself in front of his own children. So don't move to Tacoma unless you don't mind living in a dangerous part of Seattle suburbs.

North Tacoma is AWESOME! I was born and raised in Tacoma. West and North are good. I grew up in the south end. But the north end is beautiful, expensive though.
