People keep telling me that too much TV can hurt a child's development, so maybe I'm wrong to let the TV on all morning for my 2 1/2 year old son. However, it's on "Playhouse Disney" or PBS Sprout the whole time, so it's not "bad" TV. Now, my son knows many colors, can count to ten, can actually identify his numbers, and speaks clearly and in complete sentences. I have been told by my sister and my sister-in-law, both teachers, that he is highly intelligent and way ahead in his development. We know he has learned a lot from the shows he watches, but he doesn't just sit there watching the TV. He runs around and plays with his toys, plus we read to him as well.

Advantages: (1) A powerful visual and auditory (sounds) medium which can reach several million viewers immediately at very low cost per viewer. (2) Viewer has a vide variety to choose from (3) Has a deeper impact on the recepient (light plus sound) than either visual alone (e.g. News Papers) or sound alone (e.g. Radio) Disadvantages: (1) At tmes visuals can be very disturbing and numbing (e.g 9/11 scenes) (2) Discourages viewer from using his/her imagination (3) If biased, the messages conveyed may have deleterious effects. (4) Less control or scrutiny compared to visual medias. Young viewers need guidance in many topics.

Advantages - educational shows for children & adults. I've learned a lot of home improvement & decorating stuff from TV, even a little how to cook. My baby is learning to count from TV.

Disadvantages - people who spend too much time watching trash like violence, corruption, bad language, pornograohy, etc. It's no different than "you are what you eat." I believe a person can become what they see as well. Garbage in, garbage out. Another disadvantage - too much time in front of the TV leads to inactivity which leads to obesity.
