Has varied over the years - for a long time it was anything by Arthur C. Clarke - sci fi - then other authors, Asimov, Orson Scott Card...
Then Fantasy - Tolkien being the greatest at epic sci fi (wouldn't even try it... remember Sword of Shanara and its friends?)... comic or detective fantasy caught my eye - Glenn Cooke.
Fantasy comedy is generally really good - lots of authors have done it successfully - and as long as it is internally consistent, its great reading material - Harry Potter is the latest in the genre to succeed... its funny, witty, interesting, with a dark element as well... I was very surprised at how well its been done.

I like mysteries and action and fantasy. Huge Stephen King fan. I have also read and liked all the Harry Potter books. Lord of the Rings books were also a favorite. I really like books that have a great story line that has you on the edge of your seat and has unexpected breaks of comedy. It's really gotta keep rolling, be careful not to get too bogged down in details of surroundings. A lot of authors go on and on about surroundings (landscape, buildings, etc.) and it is BORING. Most folks end up skimming that section and move in to something else. Hope this helps you and good luck!

If you write only to please others, then your book will blend in with the rest and not stand out - what stands out is something unique.Write a decent short story or two that interest you first and are in your own story style, take those story outlines to people and see which ones stick out more than others, then decide for yourself what people might like from your own concepts, maybe as a twist you might be artsy and merge story ideas and create something unique that will catch a publisher's eye quickly.

Well, as a reader, I am interested in what the writer wants to say. As a writer I can tell you: Your perspective is all that matters. You write and let the critics categorize.
