How did our society, or culture, determine that a person is considered an adult when they become 18 yrs old? I know people not yet l8, that are both mentally & physically more mature than people who are more than l8 yrs old.

I think that a person under the age of 18 should not be considered an adult because there are some days they act and think like adults and there are some days they do not...everything that a person does past the age of 18 is considered remembered on that person's behalf whether it is mature or not....most people under the age of 18 are usually not as mature mentally and / or physically.....that is when most people get used to being taught in one way or another how to be when they do reach adulthood..

I think that as long as the word TEEN is in the age they shouldn't be aloud to drink, buy cigarettes, or go to war and die.. 18 year olds are usually fresh out of school and have not had a chance to experience life on their own. I think after a young person has obtained a job and endured some of lifes experiences like paying bills, and dealing with true responsibility, then they can be considered adults... 18 is too young to throw them to the wolves and consider them adults..I like 21 but I know my vote doesn't count. Think about it, alot of our 18 year olds were drafted into war when their mothers were still doing their laundry and making their dinners... What a rude awakening into adult hood.. because they haven't had a chance to experience life is why they are drafted so young, they haven't had time enough to start building their own families yet. So they take the unattached strong young ones... Oh I could go on.. but you get the message. I love my country and am very proud of those who fight for my rights, I am just a little extra saddened when I hear about a young person dying before they even got a real chance at living.

Seriously, your right I too know alot of young teens that have more common sense than a lot of so called adults I know, but I also know alot of 18 year olds that couldn't find their way out of a wet paper bag. So I too would like to know where all that mess got started with what is the proper age to consider yourself an adult. Good Question!!

Most states consider a person an Adult when they reach the age of 18. The average person should reach maturity at that age but some don't however. Their mental capacity would be taken into consideration if they were to get into trouble with the law.

They chose this age because at this age they were allowed to fight and die for their country. I personally believe people are not always "adults" at 18. It varies for every person.
