they embraced retro and have become the symbols of retro gear and attire. was this before or after, form my understanding indie was as it was and then it was willed into the spot light with independent films. i guess the idea is the more obscure and unknown something you like is then more intellectual and taste you have. it's rather pretentious (and that's rather cliché) but meh. overall, it's awful that indie and independent films and film festivals such as Sundance are becoming so poplar and gaining "mainstream" attention. not to say "all this needs to be a certain groups" but with these new members...well let me just explain it will Sundance. from what i heard all these big ticket movie stars are now going to Sundance films to star in films. great right? but now the whole event has been transformed to center around theses stars and not the films, they willingly acknowledge this, but just go with it because of the money and not to get their idea out which what (from my understanding at least) was to get their idea out and free from Hollywood hands and minds. that mindset that confines movies and music to a factory made top, made to spin a certain way for a certain amount of time. i fear the indie scene will come to the same fate. when some do get turned on to indie or hear bits from here and there, they only are stopping by for a good tune and continue to stop for just the good tune and not appreciating the construction of the cd, the songs, the lyrics... that virgin mobile commercial comes to mind where those guys sing a song and just butcher the words then say oh it doesn't matter...that really defeats the purpose of artistry.

maybe it has to do with the TV show "The OC" or other movies that try to utilize indie music in their soundtracks.
