I would 100% go VISA! From what I understand, it is accepted in more places than any of the other international cards. Once you get here though, I would recommend a Saison VISA. Great because there is no annual fee.
One thing about Japanese CCs. You are required to pay the balance at the end of each month. No monthly payments like in the US. If you go on a monthly payment plan, you have to arrange that at the store before they run your card. But that option is not available for cards drawing on a foreign bank.

Visa and Mastercard are no problem. American Express can be iffy with small independant stores. You may run into the store clerks asking you how many months would you like to spread the payments over. IN the case of credit cards issued by US banks, you will have to ask for one month.

Any kind of credit card will be welcomed in Japan excepting Amex. (5% kickback to Amex, but others only 3%)

I have VISA, MasterCard, JCB. VISA and Mastercard is accepted on most place. The second is JCB .. the last is american express
