I would not recommend a Dell to anyone simply for the fact that I know if a person manages to end up with one that has problems they will end up having to deal with Dell's customer service..and I would not wish this on my worst enemy....
go with a HP or Toshiba ......

I have used all three brands. I like Dell desktop computers, but not their laptops. I think it's a toss up between Toshiba and HP. I have had two Toshiba laptops at home. One with the 17 inch wide screen and all the power of a desktop and a Tablet PC. Both are great. HP has a laptop with the 17 inch screen with a full keyboard with 10 key numeric pad. I haven't seen any other laptops with this. Its good if you have to input a lot of numbers.

You're biggest decision is whether you want to use Windows or Apple OS X (and I really wouldn't advise asking any techies which one of those is better!) The Apple laptops CAN run Windows either virtually or on a seperate disk partition, but if you will be using Windows most of the time, better to go for the Dell or HP. I think you'll get more for your money with a Dell.

I just went through your problem, figuring that they were all mechanically the same -stands to reason due to the competition, so I settled for the cheapest and used the extra money for something else. By the way mine is a Toshiba Satellite
Good luck.

I wouldn't go with HP for a laptop. Mine is a hp laptop. I have had it for a little over a year and I need a new one because mine has crapped out on me. My brother's friend told when I bought it that I would be lucky if it lasts a year, I understand why now.
