You needed life saving surgery and your doctor smoked some weed right before performing your surgery. Would you be okay with that? Just curious what you think, still think weed is harmless and should be legal?

Smoking on a work break is considered ok, but drinking usually isn't right?

How is that different than him having a few drinks before surgery? Or should we outlaw alcohol too? (We tried that once...it didn't work.)

Ya see...there's laws against practicing medicine while impaired. Whether the doctor smokes some weed or has a few drinks, he's liable for negligence or whatever else can be brought up in a lawsuit. He could also be charged criminally.

Anything he does, at any time, that causes him to be impaired during surgery is illegal. Doctors who are on-call or scheduled for surgery are already required by law to be sober and unimpaired.

Should we outlaw cigarettes because a doctor might have a nicotine buzz? Should we outlaw jogging because a doctor might be exhausted from his morning run? Should we make a law that forces the police to check on him each night to make sure he gets a minimum of 8 hours of sleep?

While I'm not for legalizing marijuana, your logic is flawed.

Same as alcohol being legal. Still less dangerous than a dr. having a few drinks before surgery. Either way, I hope my Dr. would have better judgment. Most do, as they would lose their license..legal or not.

I don't even smoke the stuff (hate it), but it is relatively harmless, so making it illegal just seems like overkill.

If alcohol is legal, marijuana should be legal. Period. No one has ever died from smoking weed. You can't OD on it. People die from alcohol poisoning all the time. Weed is not physically addictive and doesn't really do much harm to your body, besides the lungs, a problem which could be solved by ingesting cannabis or using a vaporizer. Alcohol causes liver and heart disease, it's addictive, it makes people violent. Drunk driving is way worse than driving stoned. I've done both, unfortunately and all driving stoned does is make me drive slower. There are regulations for alcohol and there can be similar regulation for pot. Pot should be legal before alcohol. Its retarded that it isn't already.

Marijuana would fall into the same class as alcohol.. he should know not to smoke if he is going to do surgery. Don't you think that there have been some drunk drs....

I agree with Distractable Savant. Just because it's legal, doesn't mean you can do it anywhere, anytime. Smoking is legal, but you still can't do it while preforming surgery either, same with drinking. Your argument doesn't hold.

Ricvee - Beer is often a stepping stone to hard-core alcohol. The next thing you know people will want to legalize grain alcohol and rubbing alcohol. Oh wait. . .they are already legal.

Its illegal for pilots to drink alcohol and then fly passengers around the country. But alcohol isn't illegal if used responsibly.

Treat it like alcohol, why not?
