Unfortunately, it's called "SPIN". Meaningless information is put out to avert attention from the issues that should be put in the forefront.
There was in article recently, that I read, that was titled "The decreasing (or diminishing) Middle-Class". The article stated that the richest 1% in the country over the past 10-20 years, increased their networth by something in the neighborhood of a couple 100%. However, the less fortunate only increased their net worth by something in the ridiculous realm of less than 3%.
Unfortunately for those who fall in the latter, I feel that the blogs, tv shows, or other internet sites are a momentary escape from reality. For those brief few moments, you get the opportunity to put yourself into the lives of the "haves" as opposed the people that are the "have nots".
Sad, but true. Especially when the divorce rate in this country is more than 50%.
But to what is really important - your buddy in the desert. I had the pleasure of meeting an individual in the service while on a cruise. The most poignant statement that he made was " I like saying good-bye to the people that I meet because I never know if it is the last time that I will see them". Once that statement sank in, it made me cry because at that point you realize that that person may never see all of people that he/she has crossed paths with. I still think about it to this day, because with everything that's going on, I never know if I will ever see this individual again or not. (At present, he has not responded to an email that I sent a few days ago.)

Ohhhhhhh! Yeah, that's totally deep. Totally! You forget, people are stupid and that the media is manipulative. Come on now, Steve Irwin on the front cover of the newspaper?!?! How ridiculous is that?!?! (may he r.i.p. ) but still Media emphasizes the wrong things and downplays a lot of which that is very important and urgent. Blame the media for diverting our attention away from the worlds problems and instead on Brittany spears' cooch.

I agree.A lot of people live vicariously through these people.I hate reality T.V.,mainly because I have a life of my own.Tom Cruise or Angelina Jolie aren't in my prayers at night, but the troops stationed all over the world are.Let us know when your buddy comes home safely.

i could phrase the question this way. why do people care about people in wars and starving people when they are just people?
you see, it's pretty much human nature to think about these things. people do care about the ones suffering, as much as they do care about celebrities. afterall we are all humans.

Because when people sit and think about all of the horrible things going on all the time, it makes them feel depressed. Give people a break - they're just looking for something to distract themselves with. Good luck.

Because some people are very near-sighted and narrowminded and they claim t.v. shows and celebrities are their only form of entertainment.
I will pray your bud in Iraq (and ALL the troops there) come home safe and sound also.
You're right on and God bless you for having your head and heart in the right place!

it's really an odd fascination that many can't explain.
i think we're so fascinated by celebrities because their lives are what we consider "perfect" and we love watching them triumph and screw up.
weird stuff.
