Start 1st. to figure out where that question came from and track it down and kill it. No really it is a terrible question. Is it about craft labour vrs the new factory system? I think so. There is a start Part 2. how did that change the lives of the workers between x date and x date. Effects on business owners.x to x. There you go all for free. Start reading and find your examples don't generalize or your doomed. Stick to specifics

Try this:
http://www.galbithink.org/fw.htm

Also--see if you can find a book review or other discussion/summary of E.P. Thompson, "The Making of the English Working Class" (Don't try to read the whole thing--its 800 pages long.
and/or: Sean Wilentz "Chants Democratic"
Bruce Laurie "Artisans into Workers" --this one especially, hits the question dead center, in terms of the American experience.

If you have time--do read the Laurie book--not just a review/summary. But if you can't, you should be able to find something on it. For all of them, run a search with the author and title. You can add either of the folllowing terms "book review" "symposium" "discussion"

I hope your at least in colllege--that is a drop dead serious topic even for a grad student! Good luck!
