If the film is of *.avi format it would take long time to encode in VCD or DVD format. If the film is in MPEG format it would take lesser time.

For 60 minutes of avi file to be encoded in VCD it may take three hours.

I am little surprised that it took that long! I assume it did actually work!

There are a few main possibilities:

1. You either have a slow burner or you have selected a slow burn speed. Nero should show the burn speed quite clearly and let you select from a list although it will normally default to the quickest speed your burner will allow. I normally drop it to 8x in order to reduce the risk of a burning a coaster instead of a DVD.

2. The recordable DVDs you are buying have a low maximum speed. Check on the box they came in or sometimes the disc itself as it should be given.

3. Were you trying to do something else with the computer at the same time? Burning DVDs is quite memory intensive and in addition accessing the disc for any other reason, eg.playing music or downloading something else, will slow the process dramatically as Nero cannot read the data as fast as it can write it. When burning DVDs I usually leave the computer doing only that.

If i am right you must have downloaded a DVD-ripped movie which is encoded in Divx format (i.e., .avi or .divx).
So when you try to burn on CD Nero will first transcode it to VCD format (i.e, .dat or .mpg).
If you want to save on this time then use a converter software like WinMpg to convert the divx to mpg and then write it with Nero.
