Not only is it expanding, but the velocity or acceleration of the galaxies away from each other is increasing. I haven't seen an estimate on when the universe will stop expanding....most believe there'll be a Big Crunch....

Yes. There are several theories about what happens when the universe stops expanding....if it does stop. One says that according to the Big Bang theory, it will begin to contract again, and eventually lead to another big bang.. A contrary theory is that the expansion doesn't stop--it just continues to expand, as long as it contains enough matter within the universe to "fuel" the expansion.

I know this is a bit tough to conceptualize.

several of the possible models. Check it out, and take your pick !

In 1929 Edwin Hubble, working at the Carnegie Observatories in Pasadena, California, measured the redshifts of a number of distant galaxies. He also measured their relative distances by measuring the apparent brightness of a class of variable stars called Cepheids in each galaxy. When he plotted redshift against relative distance, he found that the redshift of distant galaxies increased as a linear function of their distance. The only explanation for this observation is that the universe was expanding.

But humanity will probably never know, my bet is something will happen that will wipe out humanity and no one will know what happens after that :P

Yes, therez certainly a theory on this although I can't remember the name. Hubble expansion is causing the Universe to inflate exponentially. Eventually, its spped will match that of light. That's when expansion will stop and contraction start...it's know as the Big Crunch.
The theory of Oscillating Universe says that the Big Bang and Big Crunch happen repeatedly.

Who's says that the universe is expanding? The basis of most thing astronomical are based on some facts and popular hypotheses. In theory, the universe had no beginning and an end.

In other words, how would you know if the universe is expanding or not if you don't know where to start from?

For god sake, it's just a theory. It is a scenario about a frog in the well, look up the sky and comment the sky.

It is also likewise the olden days where aeroplane is yet born, everyone says sky is the place for heaven where we go after dying. And now we have aeroplane so where is the heaven we used to speak about?

Unless we have a space cruiser to warp around the universe such as USS Enterprise NCC 1701E Class to find out the truth of the universe.

many astro physicist including the author of "Death by Black Hole" believe that the galaxy will keep expanding until the matter becomes so far apart that everything will reach absolute zero. Absolute zero is 0 degrees kelvin, this is when all molecules stop moving. Movement of molecules cause heat. To get an idea of how cold this is, 0 degrees Celsius (freezing water) is 273 Kelvin.

So, when all molecular life stops, everything stops. Forever.

Based on current research the universe is not slowing down, as a matter of fact it is accelerating at an exponential rate. We call this added "Anti-Gravity" energy Dark Energy. We do not comprehend what it is that is doing this but there are some theories. One is about zero-point energy, even the emptiness of space isnt all that empty. Check out the link.

The universe is a finite entity there fore it cannot expand forever.
One day it will begin to go out of existence,it will evaporate at it"s farthest reaches,it probably has already started it will take the same time to die as it lived before it began to evaporate

The universe is currently scheduled to stop it's expansion next Tuesday, at 4:37pm. Which should give you plenty of time to get cleaned up before supper.
