YES! Geology plays a part in every aspect in your life. From the soil that grows your veggies, to the animals that eat them, to the minerals mined to make your car, to the chemicals spewed into the air from a volcano. You can't excape geology. Plus it tells us a great deal about the history of the earth and what we can expect in the future with climate chage and sea level rise, etc.

"If it can't be grown, it's gotta be mined!" - slogan of the Nevada Mining Association.

Of course there is value in studying rocks and fossils, ie, geology. Everything you use in everyday life (except maybe the air you breathe if you are outside) either comes from a mine or is produced using materials from a mine. Even the nutrients that grew the food you eat come from the earth. On top of that the world's largest energy source (other than the sun) is oil. Mines and oil are found by geologists, so geologists contribute greatly to modern civilization.
