It's my birthday and its a private party. Nothing like a debut or a cotillion. It's a semi-huge event around 50-60 people will attend. I'm not sure if we should make it formal or semi-formal because I don't want to make my guests feel obligated to buy a new outfit just for one event. Any Ideas? Suggestions?

You only turn 18 once, so do what YOU want to do. Don't worry about what others think, or what they think about what you're wearing. I say YOU go for the gown and let everyone else go semi formal. That way you get to stand out since it's your birthday and nobody has to worry about getting something new. It's great that you're being considerate to think of your guests though.
p.s. I'd take any good excuse to dress up and go all out and your 18th birthday is a great excuse!

It's your party do what you want! People don't often get to wear formal clothes and it's always fun for everyone to dress up. Lots of people have at least one dressy outfit so everyone wont have to buy a whole new outfit. I also find it helpful when you need an answer is to put yourself in your guests shoes...if you got invited to an 18th and it was formal would you care...at all? :)

Go semi-formal.........my daughters always take the opportunity to dress up. How often do you get to be a princess? The other guests don't have to go formal, but hopefully they will dress up a little...don't worry about them. It's your party, have a good time.
Try the dresses at Forever 21 if you have one there. They are not too fancy, but definitely party wear.
Happy Birthday!!! Enjoy your party.

If you feel comfortable then wear it, its your birthday celebrate it however you want. You can make it semi formal so people feel comfortable and find something easy to wear and just have yourself and your closest friends really dressed up, so you dont feel out of place

Man it's only an 18th and yeah i think it's a little over dressy, maybe just a nice cocktail dress or something but a GOWN? uh uh too done up for a party. Make it neat/casual no jeans or anything but not prom material!

Hell yes. It's your party, you make it as you want, and if you wanna dress up- go for it. People love an excuse for that.
