For instance, how does anyone think how bad the press would have been towards U.S. Grant? or any other of our founding fathers?

Bad press evolving around presidents today is due to two factors:
1. There is much more access to information today with the internet, televisions in every home and other forms of communication.
2. Negative media seems to be a lot more 'entertaining' and makes headlines incredibly more so than positive news.

As a matter of fact the press was very criticizing during the civil war !To the point where President Lincoln actually closed some of them down !
