you don't 'be' punk, it just happens. music of the punk genre are bands such as Bad Religion, NOFX & Rancid.
avril lavigne and her music are not punk they are pop-punk which is a much less hardcore version.

The Sex Pistols are the father of this Genre. I believe they said that they had just got so sick of the whole, love and flower thing. Watch the movie "Sid and Nancy" its about the band guitarist,Sid Vicious, who murdered his girlfriend. Styles include, Mohawks, safety pin jewelry, combat boots and a lot of black. The Ramones are also considered punk.

creative hairstyles
and great music
Sex Pistols ( could be wrong here) I think were the band to really get punk off the ground. good anti-establishment music, social commentary and I don't give a .... if you don't like what I have on or my hair or manner... outspoken but don't mistake standing by your values as being dis-respectful to others who think differently ... punkers don't give a .... it was all about the music

erm, i dunno the answers to your 1st and last questions but i do know that avril lavigne's songs are 'punk-ish', maybe like he wasnt...
