Basic definition -> date of Feb 2nd that is believed to indicate the status of the weather for the coming season (winter). If a groundhog (underground animal) comes out of its hole and casts a shadow then it will return underground, thus indicating cold weather for the rest of the winter.

Also an awesome, oldish movie with Bill Murray, who keeps recurring the same day over and over, if my memory serves me correctly...?

It is a day in winter when everyone sees in a groundhog will lift its head from its hole. (They don't ever in this time they are hybernating but I guess if they wake early or somethin) If it does, it means winter will end soon, If not, winter will continue for some time. Just tradition it makes no sense.
