Wow ... that's a tough question. What do you suppose they mean by natural? Nature vs. Nurture? Natural as in we're born doing it? Or it's human nature to dislike those unlike ourselves? Either way, it's a hard question. (And for the record, I don't believe racism as we know it is natural - we learn it. Watch small children at play - they don't care about color.)

I don't necessarily think that somone saying racism is natural can be equated to being a racist. A lot would depend on the circumstances of the discussion and the way it was said. In an intelligent discussion, one could argue that developing negative feelings about those different than ourselves in natural - but can be overcome with knowledge. If someone used that argument in a defensive way, you might be able to extrapolate that they were racist - but maybe not, too. Again, it's very relative.

Basically, if it made you feel uncomfortable, I'd say choose other people to be around. This one isn't the right friend, love, whatever for you.

Good one!

Main Entry: rac·ism
Pronunciation: 'rA-"si-z&m also -"shi-
Function: noun
1 : a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
2 : racial prejudice or discrimination

It is human nature to believe that one set of humans is superior to another (this is a survival instinct... competition is natural), however, not ALL humans believe this way. I state that racism tends to be a common theme amongst humans but there are some who are NOT racists, thusly, the exception.

Race is just a handy, easily quantifiable element upon which to affix a determination of "superiority". Not all people do affix this determination based upon race. Almost everyone does have a determining factor, however, albeit sex, religion, intellect, or whatnot.

So, I would say "no" to your question.

Most likely, but not necessarily. There is research that supports that stereotypes are pretty much an evolutionary response. That research goes ON to say, however, that you can consciously work to overcome them, and the implication is that you SHOULD (if you can, and they're inaccurate and unfair). But, most often people just use that as an excuse that "well, it's always been screwed up, so just deal with it".

Not necessarily. Racists simply like themselves. Is it wrong to say that,"I think that I am wonderful and I like myself?" Maybe egotistical...but not wrong. Same with racists. They simply like their own race and their own culture and identity. (Whether that be a black, white, red, yellow or whatever thing.) Bigots are the ones that think that everyone else that is not like them are evil and something that can't be appreciated...and should be either made to be like them or wiped out entirely.
People really quit overdoing the word racist. It is small-minded and as ignorant as the bigots.
