I am a Chinese that live in Beijing and we can have another baby when the first one dies. In fact, you can have as many as you want but you need to pay more tax and the mom and dad will be look down by people as being selfish. And by the way, is not ture that we usually kill the baby if it is a girl. In China's major cities no one is doing it anymore. But in some more remote places this still happends but things are getting better now.

I normally don't do this (I usually answer myself), but listen to changljsp. But I"ll add one thing... People in China can have a second child-- they just get fined for doing so. And these days, there are millions of people moving from the countryside to the city and having multiple children. But those originally from cities rarely even think about having a second child. China is (at least) two societies, urban and rural, with the two now both in cities.

If it was less than a year old, yes, that is why so many girl babies are up for adoption, (you never hear of a Chiness boy being adopted), and then the parents try for a boy, (in that culture, it's up to the male child to care for thier parents, later in life), so a boy child is more valued.
