I have my faith in this quotation, its from Zen Buddhism.
do you know millions of people visit Mexico to see butterflies, what do you think how much this effect the economy of Mexico?

when I am depressed, watching images of butterflies and flowers helps me, without any side-effects my medicine or any money required. For me butterflies are very strong, size doesn't determines the effects.

Now, what effect could have one good thought?
lets take a example: you might have seen the smile on face of a person, when you tell them they are beautiful. Maybe with that comment you made her/his day.
your one good thought can make a whole lot of difference in his/her life and also in your life too.

I answered aquestion like this before, what you are talikg about is the small world effect. Below is ome of the answer that I gave.

We all exist within a society that follows the small world effect.
See:

http://flatrock.org.nz/topics/science/small_world.htm
I wont go into to much detail however we are all affecting each other in large and small ways. These effects are then passed on to others when those that we effect, effect others (usually in the same manner as we have effected them). The effect of this is to create what is called a resonant network where all points are affecting all other points at the same time.

So if I do something mean (or in this case good) to you (maybe I have had a bad day) you will take out your emotions (not saying you are vindictive, just this happens sub-consciously) on someone else, this starts a resonance through the network. These effects can also be isolated and amplified in curtain sections of the community by way of our associations and finacial/phisical status

What this means is that a positive or negative act will eventually reach and effect everyone on this planet. The greater the number of positive or negative the acts the greater the final effect on the planet there will be. So even one small positive act will eventually reach everyone, it is just a question of how many times it will be washed out by negative effects. The only way to keep the positive effects strong is to keep the positve actions coming.

Hope this helps.

It denotes the beginning of a big achievement or event, through a small step! One good thought or one pwerful prayer, can certainly form the foundation and strong base for very effective results! By dint of 'amorphous resonance', so many people may be praying at the same moment for the same result in various places, and all that combined force of prayers, can certainly 'move mountains', like the butterfly contributing to the storm!

On the butterfly: nonsense. On prayer and one good thought: good thinking and effective prayer aren't one time events. Good prayer and right thinking are analogous to breathing. When they stop, there is no effect nor ever was.. So one good thought or prayer for one person on this earth has no effect if the good thought or prayer is not as continuously present as one's breath is when inhaled and exhaled.

You are quite correct in your assumption regarding the butterfly wing. However! that is physics! But the spiritual assumption regarding prayer, is much harder to grasp, considering mans inhumanity to man! People blowing up other people! How can God allow such atrocities to occur! Such hatred in the name of religion makes one feel that religion down through the ages is the cause of more atrocities to man than any other following! It is certainly food for thought! You have a good day!

the empirical person will say that the butterfly's impact is so insignificant that in effect, it doesn't matter. so that being said, the counter part of this person will be the beatific star gazer who says no matter how small or insignificant something may seem, is does matter; and this is where the everlasting philosophical self checking of ones pules comes into play. i guess if you feel it does matter, then it does, because feelings for the empirical person wont matter anyway. and if you don't think it does, then this is also all well and good, because thinking for the philosophical person is indicative of something good....

Small causes, big effects. Now you can meditate about men polluting the planet with emissions of CO2, vs. volcanoes emitting their own CO2 on a much, much bigger scale.

seems like you may already know the answer. i'd rather focus on a good thought, smile or action that has a powerful and positive influence. depending on how you look at it that's all we could ever do. i know that is controversial and debatable. still what would you give your energy to?
